Still Life - Captured with Light Paint LiveAbstract Dome - Captured with Light Paint LiveThe Faces - Captured with Light Paint LiveHave you ever wanted a live preview of your light painting? Well now you can!

Light Paint Live is a new program which allows you to use a webcam to capture light painting images with a real-time preview as you perform. The program will run on any computer (PC or Mac) with an attached webcam, including those built into laptops. An Android App is also available.

The easy-to-use interface is ideal for both beginners and professionals, with no complicated set-up but plenty of controls to play with if you want to. Light sensitivity, colour shift and a cool feature to fade out images over time can all be selected, along with many more controls. These can be saved as still images or motion video.

The image quality isn't anywhere near as sharp as you will get from a DSLR, but that is to be expected from a webcam. In fact, there was never any intention to replace the DSLR. Beginners can try out a bit of light painting before investing a fair bit of cash into a camera set-up, while pro's can use Light Paint Live alongside their camera to see the live preview - very handy for studio work!

So, how does it perform? The quality of your webcam and speed of your computer will affect the results a fair bit, but in general it's pretty good. A lower resolution image will help increase the refresh rate - something that will suffer a bit on slower processors. The resulting quality of image isn't high enough for publishing in my stream, but for $5 it's a worthwhile investment for the live preview.
